April SgWIS event: showing gratitude for the people who help make careers happen

Our April SgWIS career talk was a return to the familiar form of event which we are best known for. Associate Professor Kimberly Kline lead us through the critical decisions she made and academic roles she worked that led her to join our vibrant research community here in Singapore seven years ago. She took this event as an opportunity to reflect on the role that mentors have had not just on her career decisions along the way, but also on her own growth as a mentor and supervisor.

Her gratitude toward her mentors was clear, even as she highlighted how she learnt from their different mentorship styles to be a better mentor to others. This was most clear when she talked about her plans for the future, how she feels her current career successes and security have greatly opened up opportunities for her to advocate for others and play a role in the success of others who are at an earlier career stage. This includes trying to build an active SgWIS community amongst NTU staff and students, beginning with a symposium hosted at NTU next week to spotlight the inspiring work of women scientists within their institution.

As always, networking continued afterwards with happy hour at a local cafe, where discussions about mentorship and career transitions continued among our regulars and many welcome new faces.
